The Fight for Equality in Farming: International Women’s Day 2016 #IWD2016

AWT IMAGE

Tuesday, March 8 is International Women’s Day (IWD). The theme, “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality,” addresses the continuing injustices faced by women across the globe.

Women farmers' yields, for example, are often 20–30 percent lower than for men's because of a lack of access to banking, financial services, and inputs. But filling this gap—and helping women get the same resources as male farmers—could lift 100–150 million people out of hunger worldwide.

World Environment Day

This Friday, June 5, is World Environment Day (WED) which celebrates positive environmental action and calls on each of us to create change. The theme of WED—“Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”—reminds us that we only have one planet, and that the Earth’s natural resources are finite, not unlimited.

Food production is a major culprit in the consumption of natural resources, accounting for 10 percent of the energy consumed in the United States, 80 percent of freshwater consumed, and 50 percent of land usage.

International Year of Family Farming

The International Year of Family Farming 2014 is an initiative promoted by the World Rural Forum and supported by over 360 civil society and farmers’ organizations. This worldwide celebration, declared by the United Nations General Assembly, aims to become a tool to stimulate active policies for sustainable development of agricultural systems based farmer families, communal units, indigenous groups, cooperatives and fishing families.

All this work is being made from the perspective of effectively combating poverty and hunger and the search for a rural development based on the respect for environment and biodiversity.

 International Day of Rural Women

October 15th is the International Day of Rural Women

Rural women play a critical role in the rural economies of both developed and developing countries. In most parts of the developing world they participate in crop production and livestock care, provide food, water and fuel for their families, and engage in off-farm activities to diversify their families’ livelihoods. In addition, they carry out vital functions in caring for children, older persons and the sick.
